As you may know, methadone is a key part of the care we provide. Recently, some of our donors have asked us: What exactly is methadone, and how does it help?
This curiosity is natural, so we wanted to offer a clear explanation of how methadone works and why it plays such a vital role in helping people recover from opioid use.
What Is Methadone?
Methadone is a long-acting medication used to treat opioid use disorder. It has been safely and effectively used for decades and is one of the most well-researched treatments available for people struggling with addiction to opioids like heroin or fentanyl.
At THS, methadone is part of a broader approach called Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT) or Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD)—both widely recognized as the gold standard of care in Washington State and across the country.
What Does Methadone Do?
Methadone works by stabilizing the brain and body of someone who has become dependent on opioids.
Instead of creating a euphoric “high,” methadone:
- Prevents withdrawal symptoms
- Reduces or eliminates cravings
- Blocks the effects of other opioids
When taken as prescribed, methadone allows patients to feel normal, not high, not sedated, but steady and functional.
This is an important distinction. Many people assume methadone simply replaces one drug with another; this is a misconception. Methadone replaces the instability of addiction with a medically supervised, consistent treatment that allows patients to regain control of their lives.
How Methadone Replaces the Need for Opioids
Opioid addiction fundamentally changes how the brain functions. Over time, the body comes to rely on opioids just to feel okay.
Methadone addresses this by:
- Binding to the same receptors in the brain as opioids like fentanyl or heroin
- Doing so in a slow, controlled, and long-lasting way
- Preventing the intense highs and lows that drive addiction
As a result, patients no longer experience the constant cycle of craving, using, and withdrawal. Instead, they can focus on recovery, health, and stability.
Why This Treatment Matters
Because MAT and MOUD are evidence-based and highly effective, they are considered the gold standard for treating opioid use disorder in Washington State.
At THS, we see the impact every day:
- Patients can maintain housing
- Reconnect with family and community
- Return to steady employment
- Engage in counseling and long-term recovery
In short, methadone doesn’t just treat addiction—it helps people rebuild their lives.
Sandra’s Story
Sandra came to THS after years of struggling with opioid use. Like many of our patients, she wanted to stop—but the cravings and withdrawal symptoms made it nearly impossible.
Through methadone treatment and supportive care, Sandra found stability. She no longer wakes up focused on how to avoid withdrawal or where to find her next dose. Instead, she’s working, rebuilding relationships, and planning for the future.
Sandra’s story is a reminder that with the right treatment, recovery is not only possible but also sustainable. Watch her story here.
