Understanding Bipolar Disorder

What Is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder causes changes in mood, energy, and behavior that go beyond everyday ups and downs.

Common symptoms can include all the symptoms of depression, as well as:

  • Periods of unusually high energy or activity

  • Feeling extremely happy, irritable, or “wired”

  • Needing much less sleep than usual

  • Not feeling tired despite getting less sleep
  • Racing thoughts or talking very fast

  • Taking unnecessary risks
  • Making decisions without thinking them through

Understanding Mood Episodes

Bipolar disorder is more than having mood swings. Mood episodes are stretches of several days or longer when someone feels and acts very differently than usual.

Bipolar disorder is sometimes mistaken for depression or other mental health conditions. Getting the right diagnosis matters, because many treatments aren’t right for bipolar disorder.

High (Manic) Episodes

Feeling unusually up or irritable, having lots of energy, needing less sleep, and acting without thinking.

Low (Depressive) Episodes

Feeling down, having low energy, and losing interest in things, which can make everyday life hard.

When Should You Seek Treatment?

You don’t have to wait for a crisis to seek help. A mental health professional can help you understand what you’re experiencing and figure out what kind of care might help.

Consider talking with a professional if changes in your mood, energy, or sleep are:

  • Interfering with work, school, or relationships
  • Leading to risky choices
  • Making it hard to keep a regular routine
  • Noticed by people close to you
  • Making you feel very upset or worried

Thoughts of suicide or self-harm are a reason to reach out, too. If you need support right away, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7.
