Understanding Anxiety & OCD

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a normal response to stress or uncertainty. But when worry or fear becomes persistent, difficult to control, or starts interfering with daily life, it may be a sign of an anxiety disorder.

Anxiety can take different forms, including:

Generalized anxiety disorder Panic disorder Social anxiety Specific phobias

Common symptoms can include:

  • Feeling worried, nervous, or on edge

  • Restlessness or feeling unable to relax

  • Irritability

  • Muscle tension

  • Difficulty controlling worry

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Problems sleeping

  • Panic attacks or intense fear

What Is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a mental health condition involving obsessions, compulsions, or both.

OCD is more than simply being worried, particular, or organized. For someone experiencing OCD, these thoughts and behaviors can take up significant time and make it difficult to focus on work, school, relationships, or everyday activities.

Obsessions

Unwanted, recurring thoughts, urges, or fears that cause distress.

Compulsions

Repetitive behaviors or mental activities someone feels driven to perform in response to those thoughts or fears.

When Should You Seek Treatment?

You don’t have to wait until anxiety or OCD becomes overwhelming to seek help. A mental health professional can help you understand what you’re experiencing and determine what type of treatment may be appropriate.

Consider talking with a professional if anxiety, intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, or fear are:

  • Interfering with work, school, or relationships
  • Affecting your sleep or ability to concentrate
  • Making it difficult to participate in everyday activities
  • Becoming increasingly difficult to manage on your own
  • Causing significant distress
