Understanding ADHD

What Is ADHD?

Everyone gets distracted or loses track of things sometimes. ADHD is different: it involves ongoing trouble paying attention, being overly active, or acting without thinking. It starts in childhood and can continue into adulthood.

Common symptoms can include:

  • Trouble focusing or staying on task

  • Losing track of details, deadlines, or belongings

  • Difficulty organizing tasks or managing time

  • Starting projects but not finishing them

  • Avoiding tasks that feel hard
  • Restlessness or trouble sitting still

  • Interrupting or acting without thinking

  • Forgetting things in daily life

  • Feeling overwhelmed by everyday responsibilities

  • Being easily frustrated, overwhelmed, or angry

ADHD in Adults

ADHD is often thought of as a childhood condition, but many adults live with it, and some aren’t diagnosed until later in life.

In adults, being overly active often gets better or goes away. Trouble paying attention, like staying organized or keeping up at work and home, often continues. ADHD can also occur alongside anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions.

Trouble Paying Attention

Difficulty focusing, following through, staying organized, or keeping track of time and tasks.

Acting Without Thinking

Restlessness, fidgeting, trouble waiting, interrupting others, or acting before thinking things through.

When Should You Seek Treatment?

You don’t have to wait until you’re overwhelmed or things feel unmanageable to seek help. A mental health professional can help you understand what you’re experiencing and figure out what kind of care might help.

Consider talking with a professional if trouble focusing, staying organized, or acting without thinking is:

  • Interfering with work, school, or relationships
  • Making it hard to keep up with daily responsibilities
  • Causing you to fall behind or miss deadlines
  • Affecting how you feel about yourself
  • Making you feel very upset or worried

Thoughts of suicide or self-harm are a reason to reach out, too. If you need support right away, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7.
