Understanding Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

What Is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a mental health condition involving obsessions, compulsions, or both.

OCD is more than simply being worried, picky, or organized. For someone with OCD, these thoughts and behaviors can take up a lot of time and make it hard to focus on work, school, relationships, or everyday activities.

Obsessions

Unwanted thoughts, urges, or fears that keep coming back and are upsetting.

Compulsions

Repeated actions or mental habits someone feels they have to do in response to those thoughts or fears.

When Should You Seek Treatment?

You don’t have to wait until OCD feels overwhelming to seek help. A mental health professional can help you understand what you’re experiencing and figure out what kind of care might help.

Consider talking with a professional if unwanted thoughts or repeated behaviors are:

  • Interfering with work, school, or relationships
  • Affecting your sleep or ability to focus
  • Making it hard to take part in everyday activities
  • Getting harder to manage on your own
  • Making you feel very upset or worried

Thoughts of suicide or self-harm are a reason to reach out, too. If you need support right away, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7.
