Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment
What is a Co-Occurring Disorder?
A co-occurring disorder is when a person has both a substance abuse disorder and a mental health disorder at the same time. Each disorder can cause symptoms of the other disorder. For example, a person with an undiagnosed psychiatric disorder such as depression may abuse drugs to alleviate the symptoms of depression. If the person gets treatment for the drug addiction but not for depression, the depression still exists and the need for relief from its symptoms continues. The person will usually end up using drugs again to manage their depression.
ENCOMPASSTM
THS began an innovative new program called ENCOMPASS™ in April 2010 to treat co-occurring disorders in youth ages 13-25. ENCOMPASSTM is based on 15 years of clinical research out of the University of Colorado Medical School and shows successful outcomes 10-20 times the outcomes of traditional treatments. We also have a Co-Occurring Disorders Clinic for participants who have completed the ENCOMPASS™ program and need additional, less-intensive aftercare.
“As a result of the visits to THS, I have not been back in the hospital for psychological problems since.”
